Ellsworth Police: Black Ice Exacts a Toll

ELLSWORTH — Motorists encountered black ice on the roadways Monday morning resulting in three accidents on Bucksport Road and Route 1A.


A motorist lost control and spun entering a ditch backwards causing his van to roll onto its side on the Bucksport Road around 7:30 a.m.

Richard Phillips, 66, of Rockland had been driving east in a 2002 Ford Van that sustained an estimated $10,000 damage, police said.

Just before 7 a.m., a pickup truck slid into guardrails on Bucksport Road while trying to traverse a hill covered with black ice, police reported. The roads hadn’t been treated with salt or sand, the officer said.

Lawrence Wascholl, 42, of Bucksport had been driving east in a 2004 Dodge pickup that sustained an estimated $1,000 damage, police said.

On Route 1A at 6:40 a.m., a pickup went off the road and hit a tree after going out of control due to black ice, police said.

Gary Mushrow, 62, of Hermon had been driving south in the 2000 GMC that sustained an estimated $4,000 damage, police reported.

Criminal Mischief

Police charged a boy, 13, with criminal mischief after he shot a BB gun at a neighbor’s house and broke two windows Sunday.


Police arrested two men during an alleged burglary in progress at Moto-Car on Route 1A Friday afternoon.

John Nadeau, 31, of Bangor was charged with burglary, theft and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant.

Jason Bosse, 27, of Wayne was charged with burglary and theft.

Police are investigating a burglary at a Chapel Street apartment that was interrupted by someone checking on the residence, police said. There is a suspect.

A Russian Road residence was reported burglarized. Some $4,000 worth of stereo equipment was stolen.

Seatbelt Detail

Police conducted a seatbelt detail Friday issuing seven tickets to motorists and passengers not wearing seatbelts out of ten vehicles stopped.


Dean Fernald, 30, of Ellsworth turned himself in at the police station on a warrant charging failure to appear.

Lisa Schmidt, 53, Ellsworth, operating after suspension.

Thanh Nyguen, 40, Ellsworth, theft.

Matisha Pitts, 24, Ellsworth, violating conditions of release, theft by unauthorized taking or transfer.

Wendy Marquis, 46, Southwest Harbor, operating after suspension.

Brian Marquis, 56, Southwest Harbor, permitting unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
