Ellsworth man receives education award



David Megquier of Ellsworth is presented with the Walter O. Mason Award by Amy Verlanic, board chair of the Council for Opportunity in Education.

ELLSWORTH — Ellsworth resident David Megquier, director of the Maine Education Opportunity Center and Talent Search programs at the University of Maine, was recently honored with the Council for Opportunity in Education’s (COE) Walter O. Mason Award.

The award, established in 1988 to honor those who exemplify Mason’s leadership and ideals, is the highest honor awarded by COE and recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions to the federal TRIO Programs and the advancement of educational opportunity for low-income, first-generation students.

Megquier has been actively involved with COE for the past 33 years and has served in a variety of leadership roles, including board chairman, as the New England Educational Opportunity Association regional association president and two terms as Maine Educational Opportunity Association state president. He began working in TRIO in 1976 and has extensive program experience with the Educational Opportunity Center, Ronald E. McNair Scholars, Talent Search and Upward Bound programs.
