Elks Club Hoop Shoot Set at Ellsworth Jan. 3

ELLSWORTH — Young basketball players, take note.

The 38th annual Elks Hoop Shoot will be held at Ellsworth High School on Sunday, Jan. 3, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Sponsored locally by the Greater Elks Lodge 2743 of Ellsworth, the national foul shooting competition is open to boys and girls ages 8-13.

Competition will be held in three sessions: 9:30 a.m. for ages 8-9, 10:30 a.m. for ages 10-11; and 11:30 a.m. for ages 12-13.

Preregistration will get under way at 8:30 a.m. and all participants must be registered at least a half-hour before their start time.

Contestants must be of the appropriate age for their level as of April 1, 2010.

Boys and girls in each age category will shoot a total of 25 shots — 10 in the first round and 15 in the second round.

The two older groups will shoot from the regulation foul line and those ages 8-9 will shoot from four feet closer to the basket.

Ties will be broken by shoot-offs conducted in rounds of five until a winner is decided.

An awards ceremony will be held immediately following the competition, and three highest scoring boys and girls in each age category will advance to the district finals in Bangor.

From there, winners continue on to the state, regional and national competitions.
