DEFY Gymnasts Earn First Places

BANGOR — Twelve young gymnasts from the James Russell Wiggins Down East Family YMCA gymnastics team placed first in at least one event in a competition against Bangor and Waterville on Sunday.


“As a whole, we always as k our gymnasts to do three things: try hard, show improvement and have fun,” said coach Doug Springer of Springers’ Gymnastics Center. “When we look at the meet in those terms, it was a success.”


At Level 4, Eleanor Bannerman placed first on vault and floor, Hannah Chamberlain was first on floor and Taylor Wright was first on vault in their age groups.

At Level 5, Madison Thornton was first on beam and vault, Hailey McCabe was first on floor, Mary Lou Ross was first on floor and Briana Clark was first on bars in their age groups.

At Level 6, Darcy Kany placed first on bars and beam.

At Level 7, Kelsey McGuire was first on bars, Maggie Keating was first on vault and Ellie Mason was first on beam and all-around.

Caitlin Schroeder was the sole competitor at the Prep Optional Intermediate division and was awarded first in all events.

Kanu at Level 6 and Mason at Level 7 both secured their second qualifying scores for the year, ensuring them of spots at the upcoming regional championship in Manchester, N.H., May 15-17.

Level 5 gymnasts Robin Nicholson and Clark attained their first of two needed scores.

The next meet will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Springers’ center in Ellsworth and the public is welcome.
