Cut Planned in Librarian Hours

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — The school committee here trimmed about $16,000 from the proposed budget for the 2011-2012 school year Monday by making the librarian’s job a part-time position.

The committee voted 3-1 to reduce the librarian position at the Pemetic Elementary school from full-time to an up to 60 percent of full-time position. According to chairman Amy Young, the actual percentage of the cut was left open to give school officials the opportunity to fill the job as they see best.

“It’s worded to allow for maximum creative flexibility,” Ms. Young said.

The library itself would not be closed during the time the librarian is not on the job. The facility would still be available for students and teachers.
