Complaint Policy Discussed

TREMONT — Selectmen on Monday discussed the need for a policy on handling citizens’ complaints. The issue arose after a restaurant owner complained that selectmen had discussed complaints about his establishment without him being present.

“I don’t necessarily want to adopt a policy,” said selectman Kathi Thurston. She suggested that complaints first go to the appropriate department. For example, she said, code enforcement issues should go to the code enforcement office and legal matters should go to the sheriff’s department.

Other board members agreed a policy was unnecessary. “Unless the complainant comes in here to us, I don’t feel it should be discussed in a public meeting,” selectman Chris Eaton said.
