Classic Puppetry Revamped at ART

MOUNT DESERT — Acadia Repertory Theatre is teaming with The Eagle and Rose Theatre Company to present a new take on the traditional British puppet show “Punch and Judy,” on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 10:30 a.m.

Written and performed by Acadia Rep’s co-artistic director Cheryl Willis, and based on her childhood experiences of seeing “Punch and Judy” performed in puppet booths right on the shore of the seaside in Blackpool, England, it showcases Mr. Punch, who behaves in a very naughty fashion.

“He brawls with his neighbors, fights with his wife, takes on the devil and escapes with his life!” said Ms. Willis. She said the show contains puppet antics and silliness, song and dance, and slapstick puppet violence.
