Chess club holds Ainsworth Tourney

ELLSWORTH — On Thursday, Aug. 16, the Ellsworth Chess Club held the third annual Lynn Ainsworth Memorial Chess Tournament at the Ellsworth Public Library.

Ainsworth was among the founding members of the club 12 years ago. Dick Powell and Steve Votey, who were among the original chess cast, attended and Votey took third place in the “A” division.

In the other “A” group results, Steve Tucker defeated Paul Wlodowski in the finals to take first place, while Wlodowski, who had defeated Tucker in preliminary play, took second. Sam Guldin of Hancock was fourth.

In the “B” division, Oliver Brown, a fourth-grader from Lamoine, won all four of his matches to sweep his division. Leo Wlodowski took second, his brother Roman took third and Jared Hansen claimed fourth place.

The top two players in each group were awarded some of Ainsworth’s prized chess books for their efforts.

Summer play will continue on Thursday, Aug. 22, with a regular club meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Public Library. Sets, boards and clocks are all provided and anyone from 8-80 is invited to take part.
