Board Balks at Manager’s Contract

MOUNT DESERT — The board of selectmen voted 2-1 Monday night not to extend town manager Mike MacDonald’s contract past its October 2010 expiration date.

The vote followed Mr. MacDonald’s defense of his job performance in front of more than 100 people in the Mount Desert Elementary School gym. He had waived his right to discuss his performance with the board behind closed doors in executive session, insisting instead on a public airing of the board’s complaints and his rebuttals.

Board members Chuck Bucklin and Marilyn Damon cited a number of areas in which they said Mr. MacDonald had not performed at an acceptable level, particularly in overseeing the management of the town’s finances. Board member Rick Mooers expressed support for Mr. MacDonald and voted to extend his contract for another two years. When that motion failed, Mr. Mooers moved to extend the contract by one year, until October 2011, but that, too, was defeated.

Selectman Jean Bonville was on vacation, and board chairman Tom Richardson abstained because, having just been appointed to the board Nov. 2, he had not taken part in Mr. MacDonald’s performance evaluation.

Mr. MacDonald has been town manager since October 2001. He said Tuesday morning that he plans to remain on the job until his contract runs out next October.
