BAR HARBOR — Area residents have the chance to participate in the 110th Audubon Christmas Bird Count. Downeast Audubon will host four counts in Hancock County: on Mount Desert Island on Saturday, Dec. 19; in Blue Hill on Sunday, Dec. 20; on the Schoodic Peninsula on Friday, Jan. 1; and on Deer Isle on Saturday, Jan. 2.
Bird-spotters will fan out across the region and record every bird seen or heard. In 2009, a new record was set for the Christmas Bird Count with 2,124 count circles and 59,813 total observers nationwide; the total number of birds counted was 65,596,663.
