“Big Read” kicks off later this month



ELLSWORTH — Debut author Thi Bui’s graphic novel “The Best We Could Do,” about one family’s journey from war-torn Vietnam, is the focus of the Ellsworth Public Library’s National Endowment for the Arts “Big Read” program kicking off at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, online via Zoom. National Youth Poet Alexandra Huynh will be the featured speaker.

The “NEA Big Read in Ellsworth” is jointly presented with Ellsworth Adult Education, The Grand, The Jackson Laboratory and the Maine Humanities Council and with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

At 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, Thi Bui will speak online about her book as the “NEA Big Read in Ellsworth” keynote presentation. Both the opening and keynote events are jointly presented by the Ellsworth Public Library and the Broward County Library in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Both events are free but require registration.
