Bed-builders Gear Up For Zany Race

BAR HARBOR — Four-posters, futons and twin-sized contraptions will take to the streets on Saturday Nov. 21, as the second-annual Bar Harbor Bed Races get under way.

The eccentric contest, topped with a $500-valued treasure, is drawing return contestants from last year’s inaugural run as well as new teams with their eyes on the prize.

The bed races begin at 10 a.m., following the 2009 Early Bird sale, an annual event that fills the sidewalks with pajama-clad shoppers from throughout the region, many inspired by steep markdowns and storewide sales throughout downtown. The sale begins at 6 a.m.

One team on its way back to the bed races from last year is the group of five from the Bar Harbor Fire Department. The “Bar Harbor Hose Company” was a popular favorite last year, but failed to put up much of a fight for best race time. This year, that’s all changed, said firefighter John Zumwalt.

“We’re not going to go so much for looks this year as we are for speed,” he said. “This year we’re going more for the win.”
