Barker Wins MDI Golf Championship

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — On the final round of play of the MDI Golf Championship at the Causeway Club in Southwest Harbor, Phil “Doc” Norton of Bar Harbor stepped onto the course with a two-shot lead over Brent Barker, 147-149. Jon Nicholson was in third place with a 153. Nine holes later, Barker had erased Norton’s lead. Barker grabbed the lead on the ninth hole, parring the hole to Norton’s bogey. The competition remained tight, but the notorious hole 14 took its toll on Norton, giving him a double bogey to Barker’s par. That put Barker at +4 over Norton, which was enough buffer to get him through the end of the competition.

“The course played well. I think the average was 82. Pins 5 and 8 are traditionally the toughest holes, especially when we put the pins in difficult places,” said the Causeway Club golf pro Ben Rowell. “If you were below the hole you were fine. If you were above the hole or to the side then you were probably going to take your medicine. But, even guys that were above the hole were able to stop the ball. In the past it would have rolled right off the green.”

The course was challenging but fair. “There were only a few people that shot under their handicap. The majority of them were over,” Rowell said. “Brent had a good round at 69. Jason Adams from Penobscot Valley Golf Course shot a 70 with 40 putts. He would have gone well under if he had a decent round putting.”

The low gross was Tom Abbott with 72. The low net was Dan Johnson who shot a 73, net 62. The closest-to-the-pin winners of the Causeway Club round of the MDI Championships were: hole 6, Tony DeMuro, 10 feet, 10.5 inches; hole 9, Dylan Tibbetts, 11 feet, 2.5 inches; hole 15, Mike Harkins, 20 feet, 8 inches; hole 18, Ron Baracka, 17 feet, 2.75 inches.

Other action at the Causeway Club included Ladies’ Day, which featured team play best ball net scoring on June 22. The team of Sonia Field, Judy Eason, and Patti Kennedy won the contest. The low gross scorer was Susan Parker with a 46. Low net winner was Carol Murray with a net 33.

The men’s league low gross winner on June 21 was Ben Rowell who shot a 36. Low net was Budd Williams who shot a 37, net 29. Closest-to-the-pin on hole 6 was Jay Carroll with a distance of 26 feet, 6 inches. On hole 9, Budd Williams earned closest to the hole with a distance of 27 feet, 5 inches.
