Audubon Program Slated for Jan. 19

ELLSWORTH — Downeast Audubon is sponsoring a program on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m. at the Ellsworth Unitarian Universalist Church.

Manager Beth Goettel will give an overview of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge, touching on the history of the establishment, the types of habitats and wildlife, the refuge’s seabird management programs and recent research efforts to document seabird foraging areas in the Gulf of Maine and island use by bats and migrating songbirds.

The refuge includes 56 islands along the coast from New Hampshire to Canada and four mainland units in the Milbridge area.

Additionally, Stephanie Martin, programs coordinator from Friends of Maine Seabird Islands, will give some background on the nonprofit group that supports the refuge’s efforts.
