The Dickels met and married in graduate school at the University of Michigan. After obtaining their Ph.D.s in astronomy in 1964, they joined the staff of the University of Illinois and remained there until 2005, when they retired as professors of astronomy and moved to the University of New Mexico, where they are currently adjunct professors in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

They also have held visiting appointments in Australia, the Netherlands and at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. The couple are summer residents in Manset.
