Anguished Hancock Blueberry Worker Awaits Word from Haiti

HANCOCK — Carol Paul, 51, has heard nothing from family members in Port-au-Prince since last week’s ruinous earthquake.

“I buy a phone card every day to try to reach them,” he said.

In an interview at Allen’s Blueberry Freezer Inc., where he is employed, Paul said he has been calling the number listed in TV broadcasts.

“I find number on TV screen. Keep trying. Always busy.”

Paul and his wife, also from Haiti, have brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins still in Haiti. His wife’s father is among those with whom they have lost contact.

“I keep trying. I can’t stop trying. I have to keep on trying,” Paul said.

What little information Paul has is an image that appeared on a computer. It showed the house where he had lived before coming to the United States 30 years ago.

“My house is broken,” he said.
