Alleged Shoplifters Charged With Felony Theft

ELLSWORTH — Shoplifting $53 worth of household and beauty items from Family Dollar Store has led to felony theft charges for two women from Bangor and Brewer, police reported.

Marsha Freeman, 42, of Brewer and Cynthia Smith, 51, of Bangor have criminal histories with prior theft convictions, which is why they were charged with felony theft, said Lt. Harold Page.

Officer Bart Tokas was called to the store after a customer tipped off the store manager about the alleged shoplifting. The manager confronted the women outside the store.

When Tokas arrived, Freeman was with the manager in the store office but Smith had fled in her vehicle.

Freeman was “hyper and smoking a cigarette” when Tokas arrived, the officer stated in an arrest warrant affidavit.

Officers from the Brewer Police Department stopped Smith on I-395 in Brewer a short time later, the affidavit states.

The items allegedly taken include Febreeze air fresheners, Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner and Hannah Montana headbands, among others.

Tokas drove to Brewer to pick up Smith and states in the affidavit that he saw several items that appeared to be new in her car, including picture frames and fresh air spray.

Brewer Police Sgt. David Lord told Tokas that when they stopped Smith she was trying to take a sticker off a pair of sunglasses, the affidavit states.

Freeman and Smith were each charged with probation violations as well, Tokas said.

Bail has been set at $1,000 cash each.

Smith was taken to the Penobscot County Jail Tuesday. Freeman was still at the Hancock County Jail Tuesday.
