ELLSWORTH — The City Code Enforcement office issued 24 building permits in May, far above the number issued last May (14), when a very rainy month slowed building in the city.
Several new homes are set to be constructed, including a new, six-bedroom, $600,000 group home on Union Street for Downeast Horizons. The home is being funded by the Ellsworth-area nonprofit, which operates 16 homes and three centers between Ellsworth and Bangor for adults and children with developmental disabilities.

Most of the group’s properties are three-bedroom homes, said Executive Director Anthony Zambrano, but larger spaces “can cut the cost of caring for people by 50 percent,” because staff can share duties, such as cooking larger meals. Round-the-clock staffing can easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, said Zambrano, so economizing makes sense.
“There’s more needs than money,” he said.
In other permitting news, a duplex managed by Downeast Maine Property Management has been approved on Spencer Street, and a new dock is going in at the Bangor YMCA’s Camp Jordan on Branch Lake.
Several decks, garages and sheds are also slated for construction.
