Ellsworth Fire Department Lt. Kevin Bland retires

ELLSWORTH — Ellsworth Fire Chief Richard Tupper announced at the City Council meeting Monday night that Lt. Kevin Bland is retiring after 39 years of service to the department as a paid on-call firefighter.

Bland started as a volunteer in Ellsworth, and continued in that capacity while also working as a career firefighter first in Bar Harbor and then in Bangor, where he eventually retired with the rank of lieutenant.

Bland was the lead instructor at the Hancock County Fire Academy from 2004 to 2014. Tupper said Bland was “instrumental in the formation” of the countywide training program.

He also was named Firefighter of the Year in Ellsworth in 2005.
