ELLSWORTH — Maine bicentennial commemorative license plates are now available for sale at The Ellsworth American’s Water Street office.
The plates were unveiled last fall as preparations to celebrate Maine’s 200 years of statehood in 2020 got underway.
The plate, designed by the Office of the Secretary of State, depicts the radiant, five-pointed star and Dirigo banner from the Maine state seal. The design is set against a dark blue background, which matches the state of Maine flag, and lists the years “1820” and “2020.”
Sales of the plates began in December. Through April, 1,181 plates had been sold, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.
The plates may be displayed on the front of vehicles through Dec. 31, 2020. Motorists are advised to store their regular front license plate in the car during the commemorative plate display period. Plates also can be purchased as wall-hangers or displayed in the rear window of a vehicle.
The cost is $25, most of which will go to the Maine State Cultural Affairs Council for its bicentennial initiative. The council includes the Maine Arts Commission, the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, the Maine Library Commission, the Maine State Museum Commission, the Maine Humanities Council, the Maine Historical Society and the Maine State Archives. The American will not profit off the sale of the plates.
They will be available at the newspaper’s office at 30 Water St. during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Payment is cash or check only.
The plates may also be purchased online at http://www.maine.gov/sos/bmv/registration/bicen.html or in-person at the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
