American named Distinguished Paper

ELLSWORTH — The New England Newspaper and Press Association on Oct. 10 named The Ellsworth American a “Distinguished Newspaper” among large-circulation New England weeklies in its “Newspaper of the Year” contest.

The award was announced at the New England Newspaper Conference in Worcester, Mass.

The American’s sister paper, the Mount Desert Islander, was named “Newspaper of the Year” among small New England weeklies.

Judging of the contest is unusual in that the judges are newspaper readers rather than industry professionals.

Readers evaluate each paper’s reporting, photography, design and digital offerings.

Earlier in the month, The American’s sports section, which is produced by sports reporter Mike Mandell, received an honorable mention at the National Newspaper Association convention in Milwaukee, Wis.

The sports pages have a “nice layout and photos,” according to the judges’ comments.
