Worth announces candidacy for HD 13

ELLSWORTH — J. Mark Worth, a Democrat from Ellsworth, has announced his candidacy for Maine House of Representatives District 13, which includes Ellsworth, Waltham and Fletchers Landing.

“I’m running because I love this part of Maine and I want to serve my community. I want to serve everyone just as I did as a pastor, and as I have done as a teacher in and out of my parish. I’m concerned about affordable housing and health care, and the price of food and fuel. I pledge to support small businesses and our local economy, education and workforce training for students of all ages, broadband access, and clean energy and efficiency,” he said.

Worth and his wife, Michelle “Mickey” Worth, moved to Ellsworth in 1991, and have lived in Hancock County continuously since then. He came to the area to serve the Unitarian Universalist churches of Ellsworth and Castine as their minister. He served as a pastor for 26 years. Before that Worth had been a high school history teacher and a small business owner.

“I understand that the role of government should be to make people’s lives better, and I will work from day one to help Mainers who are struggling to deal with the rising prices of so many different items. I will fight for legislation and programs that will help us get through these times, and I will help connect the people of Ellsworth, Waltham and Fletchers Landing to the resources they need. At the same time, as a former teacher, I support investments in our children’s future by supporting public education,” Worth said in a statement.

Worth holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a Master of Education. He earned a seminary degree before moving to Ellsworth to serve as a pastor. Since coming to Maine, he has been a supporter of LGBTQ+ rights, including the freedom of same-sex couples to marry. He was an adjunct lecturer at Bangor Theological Seminary from 1994 to 2013 and has served on the boards of the Down East AIDS Network and Washington-Hancock Community Agency (now Downeast Community Partners). He is a current board member of the Ellsworth Historical Society. In his free time, Worth enjoys the outdoors with hiking, kayaking, and cross-country skiing, and performs with the Castine Town Band.

“I’m looking forward to meeting as many of you as I can, and listening closely to everyone in my effort to represent and work for all of the people in Maine House District 13,” he said.

Sen. Nicole Grohoski (D-Hancock County), who previously served as the representative for the Ellsworth House district, noted, “Mark is trustworthy, dedicated to service and rooted in our community. I know that Mark will listen well and work hard for our best interests in Augusta as our next state representative.”
