Women Join To Battle Breast Cancer

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Three area women have joined together to support breast cancer awareness through a large-scale walk and fund-raiser in Boston this May.

In just a few weeks, Barbara Logue, Anne Welles and Annemarie Swanson will travel to Boston to complete the two-day, 39-mile Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. The three women have been training each day for months and are finally nearing their goal. Anne and Annemarie, both elementary school teachers, met through Barbara, a nurse practitioner. The two women also share another bond – they are both survivors of breast cancer.

Breast Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in the United States.

The walk’s organizers place a special emphasis on reaching low-income, elderly and minority individuals and those with inadequate health insurance. All the money raised at the Boston walk stays in New England.

To participate, each woman had to raise at least $1,800. Donations in support can be made by visiting www.avonwalk.org and typing in the name of the woman you wish to sponsor. Checks addressed to Avon Walk also can be mailed to 353 Seawall Road, Southwest Harbor, ME, 04679.
