Winter Harbor Police log week of January 27

WINTER HARBOR — Police Chief Danny Mitchell Jr. and Officer Eli Brown responded to a complaint of sexual abuse of a minor at a residence off Main Street on Jan. 11. Police are investigating allegations from the parties involved.

In a separate incident, Mitchell and Brown received a complaint of a rape of a woman by a man and a woman alleged to have taken place on New Year’s Eve at a Winter Harbor residence. That complaint is also under investigation.


Police received a call regarding a fraud complaint on Jan. 10. The caller was given information to contact the FBI, as the case crossed state lines.

Well-being check

Mitchell responded to a well-being check for a child on Harbor Road on Jan. 10. All was well.

Motor vehicle accident

Brown assisted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office with a crash on Route 1 in Steuben on Jan. 11.

A deer ran into the side of a moving truck on Jan. 12.

Mitchell responded to a two-vehicle crash on Island View Drive in Gouldsboro on Jan. 17. Officer Landan Scott, 22, of the Gouldsboro Police Department was responding to a single-vehicle crash on Island View Drive in a 2018 Ford Explorer cruiser and slid off the side of the road at the scene of the initial crash. Brent Hurd, 44, of Winter Harbor was driving a 2019 Ford F250 and followed suit, sliding off the same side of the road and hitting the Gouldsboro Police Department cruiser.

No injuries were sustained during the incident. There was significant damage to the Explorer, which was towed from the scene. The truck was damaged but operable.

Keeping the peace

Brown stood by while someone collected belongings from a residence on Jan. 16.

Maine State Police covered a call in Winter Harbor on Jan. 19 while local police were dealing with an arrest at the Hancock County Jail. It was reported that a man had broken up with his girlfriend and that he had a weapon. It was determined that no threats were made, no weapons were involved and that there was no ill intent.

Nursing home assistance

Brown responded to Narraguagus Bay Health Care Facility in Milbridge on Jan. 17 to assist with the evacuation of residents and other needed items after a roof failure.

Charges and arrests

As the result of a traffic stop on Jan. 19, Eben Moss, 37, of Winter Harbor was charged with operating after revocation – habitual offender and theft by unauthorized taking or transfer/use, as he did not have permission to be driving the vehicle. Additional charges may be pending.

Moss was also involved in an incident on Jan. 22. Officer Ken Schuurman responded to a report of violation of bail conditions and Moss was removed from a basement where he was hiding and arrested.
