When good belfries go bad

The belfry on The Hall in Otter Creek is rotting and in need of repair.

MOUNT DESERT — The belfries on two of the town’s historic buildings are in need of repair because the wood is rotting away.

One belfry is atop The Hall, the 109-year-old center of community life in Otter Creek.

The Aid Society of Otter Creek is asking the town for $8,000 to repair the structure.

Also needing repairs is the belfry on the Old School House and Museum on Sound Drive.

Tim Garrity, executive director of the Mount Desert Island Historical Society, said it would cost about $10,000 to do that work and to paint the exterior of the Old School House and the 233-year-old Selectmen’s Building in Somesville, which the historical society also owns.

The historical society is asking the town for $2,000 to help pay for the repair and painting work.
