- After a windstorm severely damaged the greenhouse that had sheltered his lambs, farmer John Altman of David’s Folly Farm in Brooksville shows off one of his animals. He’s standing in front of a tent that now serves as a de facto shelter for the lambs and their mothers. It was loaned to Altman at no cost by Wallace Events of Ellsworth, and without it, the animals would be exposed to rain and snow and at risk of pneumonia and stunted development. - Before the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge was completed in 1939, vehicles and people traveled between the island and the mainland on the North Deer Isle ferry, shown here docking at North Deer Isle. The steamboat wharf is visible at the right. John Scott of North Deer Isle, one of the early settlers on Eggemoggin Reach, was the first ferryman, crossing from North Deer Isle to the mainland terminal in Sargentville. His great-grandson, Charles H. Scott (1860-1939), was the last ferryman. During almost 150 years of operation, the ferry had a perfect passenger record: no injuries, no fatalities.
