Winter Harbor-Bar Harbor ferry service expanding

WINTER HARBOR — Ferry service between Bar Harbor and Winter Harbor is expanding this summer, with the purchase of a second ferry ship by Downeast Windjammer.

The Atlantic arrived in Winter Harbor last week from New York state. The ship was formerly a dinner cruise ship on Lake Oneida in Brewerton, N.Y. Over a 12-day trip, the Atlantic traveled through 22 locks along the New York State Barge Canal, down the Hudson River and then up the Atlantic Coast.

Over the next couple of weeks, the ship will undergo some repairs, including a new rudder and seating installation. Once in service, the Atlantic will join the Miss Lizzie in providing ferry service between Bar Harbor and the Schoodic Marine Center in Winter Harbor. Demand for the ferry services has been increasing recently since the opening of the Schoodic Woods Campground and the expansion of Acadia National Park on the Schoodic Peninsula.

Once in service the ferry will run through Columbus Day weekend.
