Shutdown impact minimal on boaters, fishermen

ELLSWORTH — The government shutdown will have little immediate impact on recreational boaters or fishermen.

As a part of the Department of Homeland Security, the Coast Guard will continue to function as usual, conducting search and rescue operations, maintaining buoys and lighthouses and assisting in drug and fisheries law enforcement.

At the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Fisheries Service (NMFS) will continue to enforce the fisheries laws. Although most research will be put on hold, the agency also will continue its fisheries management activities, including monitoring catch quotas and providing required observers aboard fishing vessels. Fishermen, groundfish sector managers and seafood dealers will still have to submit catch and seafood purchase reports required under federal fishery management plans.
