BAR HARBOR — A proposal to increase the number of municipal pier parking permits for fishermen to 30 will be the subject of a public hearing before the Bar Harbor Town Council w on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
A total of 15 permits were issued two decades ago. That number was increased to 25 several years back. The permits allow the holder to leave a vehicle on the pier all day. Otherwise parking is restricted to a few hours.
Only Bar Harbor fishermen are allowed to have a permit with a limit of one per fishing vessel. Two spots on the pier are reserved for police and the harbormaster.
During discussion about the permit system on Aug. 20, officials explained an effort was being made to get fishermen to keep the tailgates of their pickup trucks closed so as not to obstruct traffic.
The council meets at 7 p.m. in the town office on Cottage Street.
