Oversize Lobsters Regulated

AUGUSTA — The Maine Department of Marine Resources is preparing to implement a new rule that would allow processors that import oversized lobsters from Canada to process them in Maine.

The DMR Advisory Council, which consists of seafood industry representatives, is expected to meet some time in November to vote on the proposed new processing rule, which the council must approve before it can go into effect. A date for the council meeting has not yet been set.

In 2007, state legislators rejected a proposal to allow dragged lobsters to be landed in Maine after lobstermen said doing so would undercut the conservation measures they have practiced for decades.
