MOUNT DESERT — In conjunction with the 40th anniversary celebration of Morris Yachts, the company is slated to host the fourth annual Tom Morris Memorial Regatta as a fund-raiser for the MDICSC and Northeast Harbor Sailing School (NEHSS) scholarship programs. The race will be held on Sunday, Aug. 5, as one of the most anticipated races of the season.
The competition memorializes Tom Morris, the founder of Morris Yachts, which was originally located in Southwest Harbor beginning in 1972. The company now operates facilities in Northeast Harbor, Trenton and Bass Harbor, and a sales office in Newport, R.I. The company is now headed by Mr. Morris’ son, Cuyler. Tom Morris passed away from cancer in 2008.
This year’s regatta is a pursuit race open to all cruising and racing class keel boats
20 feet in length and up. The regatta is a PHRF handicap event and will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing, the Prescriptions of US Sailing, the Sailing Instructions, and any Notice to Competitors that may be required. The racing area will be the inshore and offshore waters of Mount Desert Island. GPS equipment prohibited by some one design class rules may be used in this event.
Advance registration and race disclaimer forms are required and will be accepted until noon on Monday, July 30. The entry fee for boats less than 34 feet in length is $5 and $100 for boats 34 feet and up.
All donations beyond entry fees are appreciated. The entry fee must accompany the advance registration form.
