Massachusetts regatta opens spring high school sailing season

One year ago this week, the George Stevens Academy sailing team was already out on the water, racing against Mount Desert Island High School in Southwest Harbor. The Eagles have the first regatta of their 2013 season this Saturday in Marblehead, Mass.

BLUE HILL — Early this week, the water temperature in Penobscot Bay was a balmy 39 degrees — a full degree warmer than off Mount Desert Island—but that hasn’t stopped the George Stevens Academy or Mount Desert Island High School sailing teams.

This weekend, the Eagles and the Trojans are both planning to send contingents to Marblehead, Mass. to sail in the inaugural regatta of their 2013 spring seasons. Weather permitting, both schools will join with Marblehead High School in a two-day team racing event that will, ideally, see each school bring enough sailors to have three, doublehanded boats on the course for every race.

By late Monday, GSA coach Tom Gutow said, seven Eagles had signed up for the trip. In a Monday email, MDI coach George Deans suggested he’d be able to fill three boats also.
