CASTINE — The California Maritime Academy Keelhaulers won their third consecutive Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup/Cal Maritime Invitational Intercollegiate Regatta last weekend, but Maine Maritime Academy’s offshore sailing team turned in a performance that left coach Tom Brown more than happy.
Sailing 10 races over three days, the Mariners finished fifth among the 10-team fleet that included crews from the Naval and Coast Guard academies, the College of Charleston and four California schools sailing in what amounted to home waters.
“I’m pleased,” Brown said Tuesday afternoon shortly after the team returned to Castine. “I thought they’d be more of a seventh-place boat with the experience we had on board.”
