Mariner offshore sailors race at Larchmont

CASTINE — The Maine Maritime Academy offshore sailing team traveled to Larchmont, N.Y., last weekend for the Storm Trysail Club’s annual Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta.

This year, the event drew 48 teams with three from Canadian universities and one coming all the way from France. With the fleet divided into six classes, light airs limited the event to just three races over generally shortened courses on western Long Island Sound.

Sailing its J44 Breakaway under coach Taylor Martin, the Mariners finished third in the five-boat class, a single point behind the winning U.S. Naval Academy team. The team from the U.S. Maritime Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., tied with Navy, but lost to the Middies based on head-to-head results.
