Lobster study volunteers needed

AUGUSTA — The Maine Department of Marine resources is seeking three industry volunteers for a lobster study being conducted in concert with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute.

The project is slated to gather catch data from traps without vents in June, July, and August this year.

Interested parties would need to complete an application including the size of their fishing vessel, their daily rate, and their preferred sampling “leg.” Three of nine legs are open for bid. One covers Mount Desert Island to Isle au Haut, another Muscongus Bay, and a third Casco Bay.

There is a three-day commitment each month setting and hauling 75-100 small mesh traps randomly positioned at three depths. The traps will be baited and sampled twice each month on three “night soaks.”
