ELLSWORTH — The 37th annual Great Schooner Race will get under way Friday morning with the fleet gathering in Penobscot Bay for an 11 a.m. start off the island of Islesboro.

This year, 18 schooners have signed up to race over a course around the bay that should bring them to a finish off the Rockland Harbor breakwater by mid-afternoon.

Hosted by the Maine Windjammer Association, the Great Schooner Race celebrates the centuries-old tradition of sailors trying to beat their competitors to market. The first boat back to port always got the best price for its cargo.
