Miff Lauriat launches his Friendship Sloop Salatia in Southwest Harbor on Monday morning aft er the vessel underwent extensive renovation.

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Miff Lauriat was thirteen years old when a new sailboat built by Jarvis Newman for his father George was launched on Sept. 30, 1969.

Miff rebuilt much of the interior of the boat this winter with his friend Dave Harkins, so he was especially enthusiastic about getting it in the water July 1 for its 44th season.

Salatia was the first Friendship Sloop built by Newman to be launched. Interest in these traditional sailing lobster boats was at a high in the 1960s. A Friendship Sloop Society had formed and boat builders were just beginning to think about building fiberglass hulls from traditional plans.

Lauriat is a founder of the Southwest Harbor Rendezvous of the Friendship Sloop Society, which will host its 21st annual race on July 13 off Greening’s Island.
