TREMONT — Incoming town manager Carl Young was appointed deputy harbormaster by selectmen Monday night. The position was created through an ordinance change approved at the May 14 open town meeting.
The decision to appoint Young came after the board accepted the resignation of harbormaster David Schlaefer. Schlaefer resigned abruptly on May 10 and a search is on for a replacement.
After accepting the resignation, the board briefly discussed hiring an interim harbormaster but decided to go with the recommendation of town manager Millard Billings to take no action. Billings pointed out that a new harbormaster could be hired as early as June 17 and, until then, the chairman of the harbor committee, Jon Crossman, could handle any emergencies.
