Deer Isle-Stonington Grad Named Collegiate Sailor of the Week

ELLSWORTH — More than a century ago, Deer Isle sailors became famous throughout the yachting world for their skill as crew aboard America’s Cup racing yachts. Last week, a young Deer Isle sailor again garnered some recognition for her racing prowess.

The New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) recently named Grace Becton, a Deer Isle-Stonington High School graduate who is now a senior at Yale, and freshman skipper Joe Morris, as Coed Sailors of the Week for their performance in the Truxton Umsted Regatta. The pair finished second in the fleet’s Division B.

According to a statement from NEISA, Morris and Becton were “incredibly consistent,” and with only one finish outside the top 10 in the 20-boat fleet. The duo finished 17 points ahead of the third-place crew from Boston College, and just nine points behind the leading Georgetown University boat.

Twenty colleges sent teams to the Truxtun Umsted regatta.
