Coast Guard Auxiliary Offers Navigation Course

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island flotilla of the U.S Coast Guard Auxiliary once again will offer the Weekend Navigator course beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Mount Desert Island High School.

Weekend Navigator is designed as a supplement to an introductory boating course such as the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s “Boating Skills and Seamanship” or “About Boating Safety.” It deals exclusively with navigation and does not include other aspects of boat handling.

Students will learn the three basic steps of navigation: pre-voyage planning, navigation underway and confirming the plan through independent means. They will learn to take these steps using both conventional paper charts and electronic instrumentation including GPS, radar, depth finders, radio, electronic compasses and autopilot.

Weekend Navigator will start at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Room 113 at MDI High School. The course costs $50 including text and plotting supplies.

For pre-registration information, call Lance Funderburk at 276-3301 or Billie Lear at 667-5790.
