CASTINE — The 63rd annual Maine Retired Skippers Race is slated to get under way Saturday afternoon in Castine Harbor.
This year, if the weather cooperates, the first boat will cross the starting line off the Castine Harbor bell buoy at 1 p.m. to be followed at intervals by the faster boats in the fleet. The race committee calculates those intervals based on a complex formula based on boat size, hull form and rig. The “scratch boat,” presumably the fastest boat in the fleet based on those calculations, starts last.
The race is open to monohull boats at least 25 feet in length. No spinnakers are allowed.
