VFW Post 109 Hosts District Awards Banquet for Essay Contest Winners



ELLSWORTH — Commander Lou Tonero’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 109 recently hosted the district awards banquet for this year’s winners of the Voice of Democracy and the Patriot’s Pen essay contests.

District 4 Commander, Weldon Young Jr. opened the ceremonies with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Paul Coburn, District 4 judge advocate. District 4 Chaplain Ron Smith gave the invocation.

Winners of the District 4 competition were: first place, Jennifer Eckert, second place, Gretchen Veevaert and third place, Jordan Lorenz.

Eckert also went on to the state competition, where she took first place. She then went on to nationals, where she won third place.

Eckert, a senior at Mount Desert Island High School, received an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. She received a total cash award of $11,500. She will attend the University of Maine after graduating this spring.
