UPDATE: Two Dead in MDI House Fire

TREMONT — A fire Friday claimed the lives of an elderly couple and destroyed their home on Seal Cove Pond.

Edmund Branch, 83, died in the fire. His wife, Eileen, 78, was taken by helicopter ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she later died from injuries sustained in the fire.

The fire was reported about 3 p.m. by a neighbor who spotted the smoke. By the time firefighters arrived the fire already had a substantial start.

The home is on Branch Lane, a private road off the Tremont Road, near the Seal Cove Auto Museum.

Crews from Southwest Harbor, Mount Desert and Bar Harbor assisted Tremont firefighters at the scene. The fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause, which might have begun in the basement of the home, where Mr. Branch had a small commercial bakery.
