Truck driver charged with manslaughter

ELLSWORTH — A Greenfield man has been charged with manslaughter in connection with a crash that killed a Corinth man in the Washington County town of Crawford last November, according to authorities.

Nicholas P. Cota, 21, was booked into the Hancock County Jail on one count of manslaughter and released Nov. 16.

District Attorney Matthew Foster said the deceased is Mark Prescott, 49.

The Maine State Police said the crash occurred on Route 9 just before 6 a.m. on Nov. 16, 2020.

Cota had been driving west in a 2012 Freightliner tractor-trailer hauling tissue paper when the trailer met an eastbound 2016 Freightliner three-axle box truck hauling milk, operated by Prescott.

Troopers said the collision occurred in the eastbound lane of Route 9.

Foster said Cota had been driving a truck loaded with over 30,000 pounds of paper products and going “extremely fast,” over 80 miles per hour in a 55-mph zone, and crossed into the oncoming lane on Route 9.

Both vehicles belong to Krisway Truck Leasing.
