Three New Selectmen in Mount Desert

MOUNT DESERT — John Macauley got the most votes, but all three candidates for the board of selectmen were elected on Monday. Three seats on the five-member board were up for election. Mr. Macauley received 213 votes and Dennis Shubert got 198, both for three-year terms. Sumner Rulon-Miller was elected to a one-year term with 194 votes.

In other voting on Monday, Charlie Wray was re-elected to the Mount Desert school committee. Jim Bright and Chuck Bucklin won seats on the Mount Desert Island High School board of trustees. All three ran unopposed.

Voter turnout was 14.8 percent, with 270 people casting ballots. Town clerk Joelle Nolan had predicted a turnout of 275.

Asked Tuesday how she had come so close to the exact number, she said, “This is my seventeenth year working for the town.”
