Mount Desert Island High School graduate Zoe Olson has been awarded the $1,000 Peter H. Dolliver Legacy Scholarship presented in partnership with the Bar Harbor Garden Club.
Olson is a junior at the University of Maine in Orono, where she is studying earth and climate science with a minor in horticulture.
The scholarship honors Peter Dolliver, whose lifelong interest in gardening began with a victory garden he tended with his father during World War II. After receiving a BA in horticulture from Rutgers University, Dolliver pursued several different occupations before starting Deer Meadow Landscaping in Manset.
For the past two summers, Olson has worked as a landscaper on Mount Desert Island, which has piqued her interest in plant life and how it relates to Maine’s changing climate.
The St. Croix District of the Garden Club Federation of Maine has awarded the $1,000 Nell Goff Memorial Scholarship to Madison Jones of Lamoine. A graduate of Mount Desert Island High School, Jones is a junior at the University of Maine in Orono, where she is majoring in sustainable agriculture.
This scholarship aids college students pursuing horticulture-related studies and honors Nell Goff who, in the 1970s and ’80s served as the president of the Garden Club Federation of Maine, the director of the club’s St. Croix District and the president of the Bar Harbor Garden Club.
Hank Austin, son of Hanna and Steve of Orland, was named to the dean’s list at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts for spring 2022 semester.
Melissa Simpson of Franklin recently graduated from SUNY Oneonta in Oneonta, N.Y. The college’s commencement ceremony was held on May 21. Simpson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in childhood education.
Jill Hyland of Ellsworth was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) in Adelphi, Md. To be eligible for the honor, a student must complete at least six credits during the term, earn a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the term and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 at UMGC.
Edwin Pariath of Castine and Harrison Wilson of Sorrento were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2022 semester at Tufts University in Medford, Mass. Dean’s list honors at Tufts requires a semester grade point average of 3.4 or greater.
