ELLSWORTH — The Union River Center for Innovation, a facility focused on the growth and development of startup and small businesses in Maine, will graduate the first startup company from its business incubator program this month. The Genotyping Center of America will graduate during a celebration at the center on Sept. 16.
The center was founded in 2015 as a partnership between the city and the Ellsworth Business Development Corp. The center’s business incubator program provides startup biotechnology businesses and entrepreneurs with a workspace, community lab, access to entrepreneurial networks and other services aiming to facilitate their growth, including business coaching and seminars. The incubator program provides the tenant company with a collaborative community environment that also includes printing, mailing and reception services, high-speed internet, a dedicated office space and other amenities that allow the company to focus on its product or service development and funding.
Genotyping Center of America, a Maine genetic testing company serving the research industry, joined the business incubator program in 2015 as a group of a few founders. It has since grown to a company of nine employees with a global reach. During its tenure at the center, Genotyping Center of America opened an off-site lab in Waterville, secured additional funding and accomplished advancements in the field.
The invitation-only graduation celebration will be held at the Union River Center for Innovation on Water Street in Ellsworth.
