Some Discussion, Little Dissension at Lamoine Town Meeting

LAMOINE — There were several questions but very little disagreement at the nearly three-hour Town Meeting April 7.

Residents approved a $650,846.79 budget, which is $27,000 less than the current budget.

Municipal elections were held the day before and a recount for the post of tax assessor was held April 13 at the request of incumbent Colene Sharkey, who was ousted by Michael Jordan. The original vote was 187-147. The results of the recount were 187-146.

Of the total municipal budget approved at Town Meeting, $111,916.79 will be raised from property taxes, representing a property tax increase of about $100 on a $200,000 house. However, the final tax rate will not be decided until the town votes in June on the budget for the new Regional School Unit 24 (RSU 24).

One issue on the warrant was delineating the Lamoine Consolidated School property from the town’s fire station next door. The school property will belong to RSU 24 as of July 1.

The Planning Board will likely disapprove the lot because of its nonconformity. The issue would then go before the Board of Appeals for a variance.

Residents also discussed what to allocate to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and the Ellsworth Public Library. The Maine Coast request was partially funded and the library’s request was fully funded.

With very little discussion, residents also approved appropriating $90,000 to purchase a new fire brush truck, using $10,000 from the Fire Truck Reserve Fund, $25,000 from the capital projects fund, $20,000 donated by the Lamoine Volunteer Fire Department, and authorizing selectmen to borrow up to $35,000 over five years for the remainder.
