Situations Vary With Local Snow Removal Budgets

ELLSWORTH — Spring is a few weeks away and the budget for snow removal in Ellsworth and at the Hancock County Bar Harbor Airport is intact, but the town of Bucksport is not so lucky.

Bucksport has already reached its snow budget for the season, according to Town Manager Roger Raymond.

“We’re there now, and we need to replenish salt and sand,” Raymond said.

He said the town will have to purchase an additional 1,000 to 1,500 yards of sand and 150 tons of salt to make it through the season.

Michelle Beal, City Manager of Ellsworth, said last year was more difficult for Ellsworth because December 2007 brought 12 storms. Another help to the current budget is that the price of diesel is down from last year.

The snow plow budget is nearly the same as last year at the Hancock County Bar Harbor Airport despite the airport having canceled more flights due to weather this year than last.
