Several previous searches for Mr. Peterson, 61, have turned up nothing.

Until his disappearance, Mr. Peterson was a familiar figure on Mount Desert Island, and often was spotted hitchhiking to places as far away as Bangor.

He is described as being 6 feet tall and weighing 230 pounds, balding with a gray beard. He was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and brown boots. He sometimes wears glasses, police have said. A voracious reader, he is known to frequent libraries and bookstores, and also is known to love horses.

Anyone with information about Mr. Peterson is being asked to call Southwest Harbor police at 244-7911.
